Le 1833 américain:

Fine and Scarce Ames Model 1833 Mounted Dragoon Saber - When the Regiment of Dragoons was created in early 1833, Ames got the contract to design and create the new saber. This is a fine solid example of this desirable and very scarce sword. It bears an 1835 date etched on the blade near the hilt. This sword has a rounded quill back and a slightly curved blade. The leather wrapped grip is in “fine” condition with the original braided wire wrapping firmly in place. This is the early piano cord style wire that is so rarely encountered intact these days. The blade is clean steel with a little light age staining, and legible Ames firm marking, 1835 date, and United States needle etchings. There is a little light wear on the blade. The browned steel scabbard is a great match for this sword, in super condition with just some very minor dents near the drag. All the inspector’s stamps are present on guard and drag. At this point in time I am not able to find nice examples of this sword at a realistic price more than once every couple years

M-1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber aka Wristbreaker: A very nice example of the cavalry weapon used by troopers both north and south. This is an unmarked German import. The leather grip and twisted wire wrap are very good. The 3-branch brass guard is likewise very nice with rich bronze patina and a slight bend in the quillon. The blade is good grey steel with crisp edges and no edge nicks. The scabbard is about perfect... rich brown age patina and no dents. The scabbard looks just like a US made example with no rivets or screws at the throat.

Confederate Kenansville Cavalry Saber

Super untouched Confederate cavalry saber believed to be a product of the Confederate States Armory operated in Kenansville, N.C. by Louis Froelich. This one literally came out of the wall of an old home in Virginia and is still in just as found condition. No cleaning, no repairs, just a nice Confederate cavalry saber as pure as the driven snow.

Hilt is super tight and has a very pleasing 'attic' patina. Original leather has a some minor scuffs. The iron wire is complete and intact. 34 1/2 inch blade is mottled grey peppered with dark spots of patination. Blade has never been sharpened or messed with in any way.

Correct lap seamed scabbard has most of the original brown paint, even on the drag. A few dings appear between the lower mount and drag, including one dent probably put there purposely by the trooper who carried it to keep the sword from rattling inside.

Classic Confederate Cavalry Saber by B. Douglas

Classic Confederate Cavalry Saber by B. Douglas of Columbia, South Carolina. This scarce pattern is easily recognized by the unusual pommel cap and distinctive shape of the drag.

34 inch single fullered blade is lightly peppered throughout. A small edge chip can be seen about midway from the hilt. A tiny piece is missing from the point. The hilt has been professionally re-wrapped.

Scabbard is lightly stained and peppered overall. The braze line is plainly visible as well as some lead fill below the middle mount. Brass mounted except for the drag.

Tiffany & Co British 1821 Pattern Cavalry Saber

Somewhat scarce British 1821 Pattern Cavalry Saber imported by Tiffany & Co of New York early in the war.

Straight iron hilt with 95% leather and brass twisted wire. In addition to TC and star marks on both sides of the blade there is a rack number '24'. 36-inch blade with scattered stains a peppering mostly confined to the tip. Scabbard fits perfectly and is unmarked.

M1812 "ROSE' CAVALRY SABER



Curved, single-edged blade. Overall length 38.625", blade 33.375" x 1.375" wide at hilt. Maker-mark "W. Rose" stamped on back of blade; obverse marking: "V/ GF". Blade exhibits salt and pepper patina, with patches of condensation, with minor dings consistent with age and usage. Edges lightly chamfered. Washer intact. Ribbed wooden grips jappaned black, minus leather. Reverse P pattern hilt, all metal parts jappaned black, scabbard included, with light dings and one minor dent. Else VG. Solid specimen of scarce 1812 "Rose" cavalry saber.

US MODEL 1818 CAVALRY SABER

Standard curved, single edged blade with characteristic broad fuller running to within 6 inches of tip. Semi-bright blade exhibits patches of tarnish on the lower blades and traces of slight pitting on the upper. Minus washer. Hilt assembly tight and symmetrical. The backstrap and reverse "P" knuckle guard retain traces of original black "jappaning". Ribbed grip covered with veneer of the original leather, but is cracking throughout. Iron scabbard is iron, jappaned black [retaining 75%], with two carrying rings. Overall, a solid Starr saber, exuding plenty of character.

CONFEDERATE CAVALRY SABER, BY THOMAS GRISWOLD

Two-line maker-mark [reverse ricasso]: "___ ____SWOLD & CO./ NEW ORLEANS" Plain, curved, single edged blade [with upper false edge, 8 inches from tip] measuring 35" in length, 1.125" in width at the base. Blade exhibits a lightly pitted, medium gray surface with salt & pepper patina. Hilt assembly is tight and symmetrical. Brass-work exhibits dark patina, along with characteristic Griswold floral engravings on branches and knuckle-bow and pommel. The Knuckle-guard displays crude two-piece splicing, just as the pommel exhibits the characteristic Griswold blurred seam. Original brown, pig leather grip; leather is 95% present, brass-wire wrap is tight. Period scabbard of cast-iron, in place of original Griswold brass scabbard. Scabbard is solid, exhibiting rust colored surface with patina of medium pitting. Else VG.

Virginia Manufactory Cav Sabre 3rd Model,

with original scabbard.Made around 200 years ago, an American made Sabre from Old Virginia. This one has a 34" blade,the blade has some pitting would clean up a bit there are no markings visible on the spine of blade, 2 dashes or chisel cuts on right side riccasso. The dark wooden handle has some cracks, and is missing a small piece close to the pommel , no wire or leather left. The heavy dark patinated scabbard is solid , has a few dents, mostly about a foot up from bottom. This old war horse looks good as is, but would clean up + restore to a nice piece. Crisp etching on blade, dated 1837, all correct. Matching scabbard with few dents, but with what appears to be approximately 80% original lacquer.
