| Woman's Dress Grey wool and silk flecked fabric with deep striped border of dark brown with cream and green satin stripes. It is trimmed with a green and cream silk fringe. This style provides a good alternative to the floral patterns of the 1850s. It illustrates the use of fringing as a trimming, which was popular. The fringe often framed a pointed shape at the front of the bodice. Sleeve flounces were also trimmed with a matching fringe. The buttons on the bodice are made of gilt metal with white glass centres. Place: England Object Type: dress Period: Victoria Broad Date: Early Victorian Actual Date: c. 1858 Century: 19th century Materials: Wool, Silk, Satin Museum Accession Number: 1989.4.3/CST.2.793 | |

| Wedding dress and veil Date:1865 (made) Artist/Maker:Unknown Materials and Techniques:Silk-satin, trimmed with Honiton appliqué lace, machine net and bobbin lace, hand-sewn [wedding dress] Lace [wedding veil] Credit Line:Bequeathed by Miss H. G. Bright Museum number:T.43&A-1947 Gallery location:In store Object Type The bride's dress was a focal point just as it is today. By 1800 it had become usual for her to wear white or cream. This was a popular colour as it implied purity, cleanliness and social refinement. The wide skirt of dress would have been supported underneath by a cage crinoline. In 1865 cage crinolines protruded out more from behind and were flatter in front in contrast to the bell-shaped crinolines of the 1850s. People Queen Victoria helped popularise the fashion for white when she got married in 1840. She set a royal precedent by choosing a simple ivory satin dress which was very much in the fashions of the day. Earlier royal brides had worn white but their dresses were often woven or heavily embroidered with gold or silver. Social Class Weddings were one of the most festive social occasions. They gave families the chance to show off their wealth and even less well-off couples would make an effort to dress appropriately. Not everyone, however, wore white. Widows, older brides and the less well-off often preferred more practical coloured gowns. These could then be worn for Sunday best long after the marriage. They would not have looked out of place as wedding dresses in the 19th century were designed in line with the current fashions. Ownership & Use This dress, veil and a pair of boots also in the museum's collection (T.43B, C-1947) were worn by Eliza Penelope Bright, nee Clay (the mother of the donor) for her marriage to Joseph Bright at St James's, Piccadilly on 16th February 1865. Wedding dresses are one of the rare types of garment for which the name of the wearer and the date of her marriage are often recorded. | |

| 1860s Day Dress For number of garments, you can’t beat this mix-and-match fiesta. You have skirt, day bodice, bolero jacket and an alternative evening bodice (not illustrated) – but don’t forget that you can make as many or as few elements of the pattern as you wish. There are many possibilities for using this gown as your blank slate for embellishments, as well as for leaving it plain and concentrating on cut and fit. Again, underpinning guidance will be there in the tutorials, although all the underpinnings won’t be necessary if you think laterally enough or modernise. Overall, a pattern with many pieces that will perhaps be overwhelming for some to pick their way through at first, but also a pattern with many, many options that can offer possibilities for everyone. 1797 Empire Gown | |

| A very pretty original circa 1850 lady's one piece soft yellow ochre calico printed fine wool challis day dress. A lined and stayed bodice with a blind front hook and eye closure with accent buttons above, long slender lined and capped sleeves, shown fully extended, with hook and eye cuffs, and trimmed in a corded fringe gimp at the bodice and caps. A single side of front pocket in the unlined skirt, with a directionally box pleated front and cartridge pleated back to the piped waistband, and a turned and faced hem. A 34" bust, 26" waist and 56" from shoulder to front hem. In presentable condition, with scattered surface holes and thin spots, wear to the back of the neck and the cuffs, and a matching period patch and a few mends to the skirt, as found. Still a very good original example of an Ante Bellum day dress in a lovely printed calico. | |

| 1863 Brown Printed Silk Maternity / Dressing Gown! In a very wearable size for today's woman, so would work well for civil war re-enactors! An excellent example of a maternity or dressing gown with drawstring waistline for comfort! Double ruffled trim at collar and cuffed sleeves. Triple gathered piped sleeves with ruffled braiding at cuffs and collar. Two pockets at front. Dark metallic thread "frog" closures all the way down the front which is mostly open for what I assume is easy breast feeding! Great polished cotton or oil cloth lining. Measures: 37/38" bust, 15" across back between armseams, 31" waist, 41" long in front from waist to hem, 42" long in back. | |
