| Confederate-Used Enfield Cartridge Box from Famed Gettysburg Museum. This British-made sergeant's model Enfield Car Confederate-Used Enfield Cartridge Box from Famed Gettysburg Museum. This British-made sergeant's model Enfield Cartridge Box still bears its original old inked tag "Confederate/ Cartridge Box" just as it did when part of the well known Lee's Headquarters Museum in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. In 1999, the museum underwent extensive renovation in order to concentrate its interpretation on the First Day's Battle and during the process a number of duplicate and unrelated items were deaccessioned to raise funds, including this historical accoutrement. The box itself shows period use but is in fine, pliable condition with the full interior five-section tin present. Underneath the exterior flap is the attached cap pouch with its animal hair lining and the interior flap complete with its compartment for other musket tools. All buckles and straps are in place including the wide buff leather flap closure. Under the exterior flap is the yellowed identification tag, measuring 1.5" x 0.5", showing its age but sound and very clear. The modern tag that was on display with the box at the museum is also included. A notable piece of equipment with a strong Gettysburg connection. | |
