| The cap shown here is the classic depot issued French style Confederate enlisted man’s butternut cap. The cap’s two piece body is made of wool and cotton. The two piece exterior band of the same material. The interior is lined with what once was a lighter, but now, brown cotton check print, and has a nearly one inch wide brown leather sweatband. The chinstrap is made entirely of painted linen and is fastened with two hollow backed flower buttons. The brim is made of two pieces of leather with a leather beaded edge. Another expert who examined this cap (whose report accompanies it) believed it was originally gray, however I have always found that some color remained in unexposed areas and there is no trace of gray whatsoever; the tint on the top is merely soiling. He even believes that it changed color almost immediately and consequently was this butternut color when it was used. It is only on this very minor point we disagree. We both agree there is no doubt that this is an exceptionally, fine example of an original Confederate Cap from the early War period. The cap has no restoration, some minor nibs and tears in the body and an especially nice liner. The cap’s provenance goes back to the William Turner collection. Through the years I have owned more Confederate general’s caps than enlisted man’s and the same goes for colonels, etc. This is because the general could put his away after the War and later generations kept them for their beauty, but the plain private’s cap was worn away or if it survived, it was thrown out in later years, consequently they are almost gone with the proverbial wind. This is a stellar example of the extremely hard to find private’s Cap Origine du texte :http://www.oldsouthantiques.com/os3082p1.htm | |

| Pictured above is the Confederate enlistedman’s kepi worn by Robert C. Rowan of the 62nd Tennessee Infantry. Also shown is the wartime picture of Rowan himself wearing his captain’s uniform. This kepi has all the proper proportions and material for a Confederate kepi. Although a number of mouse gray or brown kepis exist, so far as is presently known, this is one of only three all cadet gray enlisted pattern kepis that have survived. The other two are the Redwood kepi, once in the Museum of the Confederacy, and a kepi in the county museum in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. This is neither of those. The kepi is a chasseur style pattern made of gray wool and cotton material, the gray wool weft is cadet gray color, and the cotton warp in white. The kepi measures three inches high overall in the front, and five and one half inches in the back, the top is five inches in diameter. The band is seemed at the rear only, while the body is seamed in the front and rear. The visor is made of a single thickness of what is probably pasteboard, with oil cloth on top and bottom. The edge has an oilcloth binding, sewn in place by machine. The Visor is two inches deep in front. There is no chinstrap remaining, though there are places where buttons were once located. | NORTH CAROLINA KEPI: The crown of the cap has a silver bullion "Bugle" infantry insignia with a North Carolina state seal button mounted on its center (most likely owner supplied and installed). The chin strap buttons are small U.S. Staff. The lining is a calico material and the cap band is Cadet Gray. This cap demonstrates the same fading to its present color as do many jean canteen covers. | 50th Virginia Infantry Cap This cap belonged to two Confederate soldiers from Tazewell County, Virginia, Allen L. Hash and Lt. George W. Wallace, Company C, 50th Virginia Infantry. On July 2, 1861 Hash and Wallace enlisted from Burke’s Garden (a very small isolated community built in the mouth of an ancient volcano so that it is completely surrounded by mountains). Both were farmers. The 50th Virginia was serving at Carnifax Ferry, in the mountains of Virginia when a battle was fought there in which the Confederates were driven back. It is not known if Hash was captured in arms or was one of the many Confederates in the field hospital with smallpox. Either way he was taken prisoner on September 10, 1861. Eight days later he was at Cross Lanes on his way to an Ohio prison camp. At this time it was discovered that he had enlisted at only fifteen years old. This, however, apparently did not save him and he was never heard from again. Most likely he succumbed to the smallpox under the harsh conditions of the prisoner’s march. Both men’s names are inside the cap. Hash’s name is sewn into the inner band and Wallace’s name is on a paper label pasted on the inside top. From this we can deduce that Hash first owned the cap and Wallace must have gotten it from him at Carnifax Ferry prior to the formers capture and the latter’s promotion. The paper label must have been applied at some future date when Wallace loaned it to a museum or veteran’s hall collection; certainly he could not have worn it with the paper label in place for any length of time. Confederate enlisted infantry caps are extremely rare, much more so than Confederate officer’s caps because privates could ill afford to put one aside for sentimental reasons after the War. The cap has had no restoration, yet it is in very good condition, primarily because Private Hash died so early in the War and Lt. George W. Wallace preserved it. The cap has had a complete chemical, fiber and dye analysis which positively dates it to the antebellum period *. The full analysis report is copied below: Allen L. Hash Co. C 50th Va. Infantry Cap | |
