Quilted Silk Winter Bonnet

From my private collection, comes this mid 19th century, quilted silk winter-bonnet. Exterior of bonnet is of light weight, tightly woven silk, comparable to 12mm silk habotai. Bonnet is padded with wool batting. The exterior silk is pieced on the crown, the skirt, and brim. Bonnet is fully hand sewn and hand quilted.

1860's Green Taffeta BonnetNot every lady in the 1860's was a slave to fashion, just as not every woman in our day is such. This is an example of a low bonnet from the 1860's, for those who did not desire the large spoon shape. These are sometimes reffered to as "low spoon". It is made from green irredescent taffeta and trimmed with rooster feathers and velvet flowers. It can be worn with the 1860's Green Plaid Day Dress

1860's Brown Taffeta Spoon Bonnet
This is another example of the Civil War era spoon bonnet, made of brown irredescent taffeta and trimmed with an antique ostritch feather, antique millinery flowers, glass beads, and cotton net. It can be worn with the 1860's Plaid Silk Dress.

1860's Blue Velvet Spoon Bonnet
If you noticed that this is the same pattern as Scarlett's Paris Hat, you are correct. Having made a pattern from scratch why only make one? This one I designed to wear with the 1860's Fitted Coat. It is made of blue velvet and blue irredescent taffeta, trimmed with an ostritch feather and gold trim.

62 Shirred Silk Spoon Bonnet

1864-1865 Silk Drawn Bonnet

This antique Victorian Civil War era gray silk drawn shirred bonnet dates from the 1860s. It is made of an iridescent grayish green silk fabric on a caned frame. The fabric has many tiny gathers, ruching and pleating detail. There are silk ribbon ties for securing under the chin with curving sides and a curtain, cape, flounced fabric drape back trimmed with black chantilly lace. Inside the front brim is lined in silk and muslin, tulle in the back. This beautiful bonnet measures 20 inches in circumference around the face and 12 inches deep. It is in as-is condition, with some fraying of the silk along the front brim edging and back. The silk ribbon ties are frayed.
