Les recherches en matières d'uniformologies nordistes sont encore plus difficiles que celles du sud.

Les dépôts, s'ils sont largement connus, n'en sont pas moins sources de casse tête, la multiplicité des contrats de soutraitances aidant en celà.

Voici quelques modèles et leurs spécificités de la fameuse shell jacket utilisée pour la cavalerie et l'artillerie:

H.E. HARKNESS CAVALRY SHELL JACKET



Vue de face:12 petits boutons et 4 petits boutons de col. Tous les liserets jaune sont cousus au fil de lin blanc longitudinalement



vue de dos: elle a les "pillows" réglementaires et est bien coupé en v




montage col: réglementaire avec la double rangée de liserets



doublure: la veste est doublé "brownish type "jean" cloth with muslin sleeve linings" Cette doublure est la plus typique des modèles. Et vous apercevez une pochette intérieure sur le côté gauche de la veste.

ST. LOUIS ARSENAL ARTILLERY SHELL JACKET



vue de face:elle est a onze bouton, et 4 sur le col tous petits, les liserets sont cousus main sur toute la longueur au fil de lin,



vue de dos: elle dispose des "pillows" règlementaires, mais le bas de la jaquette est coupe en arrondi, par opposition aux autres fabriquants



col et son montage:le col n'a que deux simples liserets de chaque côté.



doublure: The linning in a St. Louis jacket is made of a cotton drilling material and the sleeves are lined in muslin.



marquage: Cette veste n'a pas de tampon d'arsenal juste un numéros de taille

VESTE FRONT DE L'OUEST

Voici une veste portée par un gars du 6th Kansas, front de l'ouest, qui fût fait prisonnier en 1864, et se battit contre les cherokees:

On peut justement penser d'après ces documents que l'intérieur est doublé en coton lin ou popeline, avec une légère différence entre le tissu des manches plus souple et celui du tronc plus réche

voici ce que l'on peut lire: Most arsenals & depots used sewing machines in limited areas of production, unlike contractors who used machines where ever possible. The St. Louis Depot Mounted Services Jacket has an unusual amount of machining stitching for a government-made garment. It is interesting to note that the only hand work on the whole jacket is the pocket opening, tape around the bolsters, sleeve linings at the arm holes, buttonholes and buttons.





dos: classique du modéle

détail:The 3/8" worsted wool scarlet tape is applied by sewing machine throughout the entire garment with the exception of the bolters, where it is sewn on by hand. This indicates that the bolsters were set into the rear seam first, before the tape was applied. The bolsters were set at the bottom of the rear/side seams and were designed to 'bolster' the weight of an artillery sable belt which carried the pistol and sabre of a mounted soldier. The mounted services jackets are typically longer than most other Civil War shell jackets as the belt needed ride above the bolsters. The bolsters on this jacket are 5" apart. 2 1/2" high, 1 1/8" wide.

While the trim on the bolsters is applied by hand, the trim on the back/side seam is applied by machine, since there is no stitching on the inside of the lining, this must have been done prior to the lining being set into the garment.




col:[/u]Most Mounted Services Jackets produced and issued during the Civil War had two 'false button holes' on the collar. These false button holes were formed by applying two double-rows of wool lace. Among the unique features of the St. Louis Depot Jacket is that the collar trim only has only two single-rows of trim on each side of the collar, instead of the two-double rows. Top row of trim ends 4" from end of collar Bottom row ends 4 1/2 from end of collar.

The collar height of 2" is slightly lower than the Federal Quartermaster Regulations call for 2. The rear of the collar the is 1 7/8" high. The bottom of the inner collar is raw edged and as with most uniforms, the inner collar is pieced. There is one hook and, but the eye is missing. The collar buttons are counter sunk into the collar.




doublure:The body lining is woven out of a jean cloth with a brownish wool yarn and off white cotton. Three rows of quilting are machine stitched in a circular pattern about 2" to 3" apart. The quilting covers the front and side panels. The inside pocket is also made out of the same thin cotton that the sleeves were cut from The pocket was in a kidney shape about 13 1/2" high, 6" deep at bottom, 1 1/4" on top. The pocket opening is about 5" and is double rolled and hand topstitched. As the quilting skirts around the pocket, it is safe to assume that the quilting was done after the pocket was set. On most artillery jackets the pocket was usually set after the quilting.



marquage du modèle: The inspector stamp on the inside of the garment is marked "GOV'T MANUFACTURE/JNO. SKERRITT, INSP'R/ST. LOUIS MO." The Inspector stamp is 1" high by 2 1/2" wide. John Skerritt worked in St. Louis at the Fourth Street Hall (also known as Hall #4) from January 8, 1863 into June 1865 The garment is marked with two other stamps, one is a size stamp is marked "2" in red ink, this is most likely the size the garment was cut to. Although marked size 2, few of the sizes of the garment match those called for by the Federal Quartermaster Regulations 2.

La série va continuer, dans la mesure où j'ai eu de la chance de trouver des plans complets de ces shell jacket sur différents supports. Je pense que cet article vous conviendra dans un premier temps, sachant que sur le même support, je ne pense pas que vous pourrez trouver autant de types de fabrication du même modèle ainsi étalés.

Cette veste est d'origine inconnu, le tampon de fabrique ayant déteint, la douvblure étant en très mauvais état. Il s'agit d'une 12 boutons, les willpos réglementaires sont présents, le dos est en arrondis comme du modèle Saint Louis, mais le col est à double liserets.
On distingue bien les boutons qui sont du type général service, et à priori certains boutons de manchettes sont manquants.

The only flaw is minor repair on its right shoulder and three buttons have come off over time (I will provide replacements). This arguably has the most desirable combination of features you could ask for: cavalry, great condition, awesome lining. It would be hard to improve on this hard-to-find uniform piece.

A Civil War Cavalry shell jacket. Regular wear for Cavalry private. Navy wool short fitted jacket with goldenrod yellow wool braid, high collar, brass buttons, lined with red and black checked wool homespun, name in right sleeve, possibly "Harkness".

Union Civil War cavalry shell jacket, dark blue wool with yellow trim, twelve buttons down front, two buttons on right collar, stamped inspection mark on lining of proper right sleeve "...U.S. Insp...", four crude slash marks (possibly owner's ID), interior of left sleeve stamped "Eaves;" blue cotton pants with white wool stripe.

VESTE SHELL JACKET début de guerre
This jacket was examined by Robert Hench, History Department USC. His report follows: It has the correct weave of fabric which is a 10/12 count weave wool material as described in the Department of the Army Quarter Masters Regs. This jacket was manufactured between 1858 and the beginning of the Civil War. The button holes are hand sewn as is the collar. This technique, part machine/part handwork, is very common to the era. It is common to see slight variations in design such as the rounded collar and single yellow tabs, per button on the collar. The overall condition is excellent with no wear or moth damage. It is my opinion that the garment was either not issued or stored, at the time of issue, and used only as a dress garment, which was a common practice among enlisted men. There are two buttons that have been replaced.

VESTE DE CAVALRY DEPOT NEW YORK

A standard issue cavalry jacket in excellent unissued condition just like the old days. This one is lined in cream color muslin. Excellent condition from top to bottom…. Maker marked “A Rose New York” in both sleeves…. appears to be a large size 3 though no size marking is present. Complete with all the buttons except one on the cuff. You will be extremely pleased with this original CW uniform coat and I have it priced with today’s economy in mind. This one comes to the market from a friend in a neighboring state who is struggling with the economy and needed to raise money NOW… I hate to buy items when someone is in distress, but doing so helps him, helps me, and gives the next buyer a good deal for his collection.

Civil War Shell Jacket, ORIGINE inconnue

made of typical dark blue wool, partially hand-sewn, partially machined, trimmed with 3/8” red worsted tape per regulations. This specimen with ink stamped oval cartouche in left sleeve indicating manufacturer by the Schuylkill Arsenal. Jacket with compete but worn body lining consisting of course woven butternut cotton ticking and thinner white muslin gauze in sleeves. Retains complete suite of 12 brass eagle general service buttons including 4 on collar and 2 each on cuffs and rear pillows.

On constate un racourcissement du col, un double liseret et un passant de sabre a été rajouté, surement pour supporter un sabre lourd 1840 de dragon

Elle fût confectionnée par une commande privée. Le tissu fin est de qualité officier, du type standard pour cette caste.
Le montage des épaulettes est typique des qualités de confection de l'époque, pour du fait sur mesure:

C'est vrai que par le grossissement de la photo après scanner, on constate effectivement que les manches sont montées à l'envers.

Et force est de constater que la veste est dans un état particulièrement neuf: contrairement à la légende, l'énormité de montage l'a t'elle fait laisser dans un placard, cette magnifique veste, le sous officier même manchot ayant eu du mal à la porter.

Contrairement à la légende originelle, il est fort peu probable qu'elle est été portée.
