Un cap pouch en oil clothed

Every Confederate soldier who carried a gun had a waterproof cap box to store and protect a supply of percussion caps. A firearm without a cap was useless. The most common Confederate cap box is easily distinguished from its Yankee counterpart by a single, wide, leather belt loop and lead closing finial affixed to a leather box. A much rarer version, made of painted canvas was produced within the Confederacy. All known maker-marked painted canvas accoutrements were made in Columbus, Georgia, home to the South’s largest painted canvas manufacturing concerns-Brands & Corner and the Eagle Manufacturing Company.

Though this box is unmarked it was most likely made for, or by, the Columbus, Georgia Depot. From this depot they were shipped to the various Confederate Armies.

Although painted canvas accoutrements were made in large numbers, surviving examples are exceedingly rare. Canvas accoutrements are especially desirable because they clearly illustrate the South’s ingenuity and lack of resources.

The example shown here is an excellent example of a painted canvas percussion cap box. The canvas is in nearly perfect condition; the leather latch tab was broken and has had a new one spliced in. This was well done and cannot be seen from the outside. The leather of one of the end caps appears slightly different than the other so one may be a period or later replacement. The lead finial is tight and the canvas is as good as any I have ever seen. All of the stitching remains intact and tight.

Il y a eu aussi des cap pounch, des ceintures, des holsters, des chaussures, mais le plus courant reste la couverture en oil cloth.
J'avais lu un truc là dessus dans les années 80 sur CCG

Je n'ai pas trouvé de doc sur les fabriquations de Brands & Corner and the Eagle Manufacturing Company en oil cloth.
J'ai par contre trouvé que N. Crown and Co et Williams Brand and Co de Columbus en avaient fabriqué.
Pour WB entre octobre 63 et fevrier 64 11 600 sets ( caps pounch, cartridges box, ceinture et fourreau de bayo)
Pour Crown, entre juin 63 et fevrier 64 6 050 sets de rpoduits.
Il y a des exemples sur schoes of glory CS p185 et 198 199, un dessin sur confederate sketchbook, p 67 Illustrated history of american CW relics.
La goutte de suif nous indique une fabrication William brand.
Une pièce interessante pour un collectionneur car rare, il est à noter qu' à ma connaissance, il ne reste pas de cartridges box survivantes de ce fabriquant.

Merci, Chancremou! Ils n'étaient pas tous fabriqué par des dépots non, plus, celui-ci j'ai l'impression que c'était un en cuir abimé puis réparé par un soldat avec du "oil cloth".
