HELMETS IN tHE CIVIL WAR

Le port de casques a existé au moins en début de guerre, des gravures et reliques existe en musée ou chez les collectionneurs.

Le casque, descendant des casques de la révolution américaine, mais aussi des emprunts des matériels des troupes étrangères, existe sous différentes formes.

Un premier exemple : voici un casque de dragon de Caroline du sud, un bel exemple de savoir faire outre océan:

Militia Vol. Dragoon 1835-1840

Volunteer Militia Dragoons helmet of leather with brass mountings and brim trim.Letter "A" is silvered copper. red velvet with gold bullion trim wraps the base of the helmet. Large brass comb with horse hair plume. Star side buttons on both the comb and the helmet itself. Brass trim wraps the leather brim. The leather body is 4 piece construction. the wide leather sweat band is perfect. Part of a maker label remains but nothing legible.

Providence Horse Guard - Rhode Island Dragoon Shako c1850

Dragoon Shako of the Providence Horse Guard of Rhode Island c1850. The shako is a high quality blue felt applied over leather. All mountings are brass now aged to a deep red. Obviously the brass has a considerable copper content in these early years. The crown has original horse hair plumage terminating in a super eagle head. The sunburst plate has the Rhode Island state seal plate above the intertwined PHG. The side buttons are stars ans the brim and trimmings are brass.This early version has a brown leather sweat band and the inside of the helmet is tanned, raw leather.

South Carolina - Charleston Light Dragoons Shako c:1850

South Carolina - Charleston Light Dragoons Shako c:1850 with Silver plated, brass mountings. Leather shako with original sweat band / liner rosette, Silver star side buttons and comb. The entire visor and all other mountings are also silver plated brass. A scarce South Carolina Dragoon Helmet.

Washington Greys Dragoon Shako C1850 New York

Dragoon Shako of the Washington Grey's Troop of New York c1850. The shako is a high quality black beaver felt applied over leather. All mountings are brass. The crown has original horse hair plumage terminating in a super eagle head. The sunburst plate has a silver on copper bust of George Washington. The side buttons are of the Federal Shield pattern. (one missing). The brim and trimmings are all brass.This early version has a rough brown interior of untanned, raw leather. More information is on page 291 of American Military Headgear Insignia.
